Gentle Yoga

This class is taught by:

Marti Dowman

I started my practice of Yoga after exploring Buddhist meditation. During my first yoga class at a local gym, I immediately felt the “meditation in motion” that helped calm the mind and facilitate the mind/body connection I was seeking. Wanting to take my practice to a deeper level, I completed 200 hour teacher training at Joyful Yoga in December 2010. In an effort to better serve all students, I completed my 500 hour training in September 2013 with Inner Peace Yoga Therapy in Asheville, NC.
The burst of the housing bubble ended my sales career but blessed me with the freedom to pursue work from my heart center. I now teach several classes weekly and love to combine asana with the wisdom found in the Yoga Sutras. My intention is to continue to grow in my practice on and off the mat while being of service to students.

I found yoga in 2010 during a difficult time in my life. I was taking one or two classes a week and I remember thinking "Hey, that took my grief away for a second" and I found I could breathe easier. Soon after I retired from the Post Office and moved to SWFL I started my daily practice and realized Yoga has healing and energetic qualities. I began to understand that the ancient philosophies aligned with my beliefs and how I lived my life. I started to see Yoga as a tool for cultivating overall health, wellbeing and self-transformation. I realized this is big stuff and needs to be shared and I completed my 200 hour teacher training at Yoga Bird. My favorite thing about yoga is that it meets you where you are on any given day or moment and carries you to where you need to be. I like to design and teach classes that are accessible, meaningful and sustainable. In class we will consciously connect breath-body-mind while we explore the development of strength, flexibility and balance. I would like to teach you to practice with insight and inner compassion so as leave your mat you do so with an energetic feeling of sense and self.

Linda Rowland

I first discovered yoga 6 years ago as I sought a new way to manage old stresses. It wasn't long before I started to see and feel the profound difference that the practice had on my mind, body and spirit. I ultimately wanted to learn how to share it with others. Since completing my training, my own teacher’s soul has found true delight in teaching yoga. My goal is for students to find what serves them best in their practices; for some that may be learning how to do advanced poses, but for many it is really about finding balance and inner peace and getting in touch with their own physical and spiritual selves. To that end, while I love teaching all levels of yoga classes, I truly enjoy teaching Basic, Gentle and Restorative classes and incorporating crystal bowl sound therapy into my classes. The bowls create a sort of magic all their own, and I am grateful to be able to share that magic with Yoga Bird students of all levels!

I have been practicing for about 20 years. I quickly found that the practice helped me cope with the stressors in my life. I reached a point where I wanted to share yoga with others. In June 2011, I became a registered Yoga Teacher. My approach in teaching Hatha style yoga has been very much influenced by the wonderful teachers I've had over the years. I combine aspects of Iyengar, Kripalu, Power, Ashtanga and Hatha in my teaching style, depending on what type of class I'm teaching. I also incorporate my knowledge as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in using yoga as a self-care approach, a strategy to manage stress, and a way to align mental and physical health. I am honored to be working with this group of teachers at Yoga Bird, and to have more opportunities to grow, learn and share with others.
Begin to awaken to your body in Gentle Yoga, gradually gaining flexibility and mobility through stretching the body and stabilizing the breath. Those new to the practice will benefit from the slower pace and emphasis on reclining and seated postures. More experienced students find Gentle Yoga a place to reconnect with the fundamentals of practice and to cultivate mindful awareness.
