Yoga 1

This class is taught by:

Sue Persia

It has been just over twenty years since I first stepped into a yoga studio. Since then I have studied with many great teachers, from a variety of yoga styles. They have all shaped, and continue to shape, my experience and practice of yoga and meditation. I believe that breath and alignment are the most transformational aspects of yoga and rely on them for support as I make my way through this amazing life. After relocating to Fort Myers, FL from Philadelphia, PA in 2012, I was in search of a new yoga “home”; I found that home at Yoga Bird. I received my 200-hour yoga teacher certification from Yoga Bird in 2017. Although I consider myself a student first, I am honored and eager to share the dynamic tradition of yoga with others. My biggest source of inspiration is my three-year-old son, who is full of spirit, curiosity, and a playful approach to facing new challenges. May we all be that way on the yoga mat and in life. I am grateful to be a part of the Yoga Bird community and look forward to meeting you in the studio.

Jamie Verley

The first time I found myself on a yoga mat was in 2006, on vacation, with a library DVD and the gripping fear that I was doing it all wrong. I was surprised that during the practice, I enjoyed the stilling sensation of being aware of my body and breath, and after, the warm and lasting glow I felt. Upon returning home, I signed up for a beginner series at my local studio, where I stayed for 5 years before moving to Fort Myers, FL. For me, yoga began as a way to heal severe back pain, condition my body, and to find serenity in a stressful life. Since, the true and lasting tradition of yoga has continued to unfold for me, and has become my greatest source of physical and emotional healing, of confidence and personal strength, and of mental and spiritual growth. I am honored by the opportunity to share my love for the many facets of yoga, and through an encouraging, alignment and stability focused practice, my intention is to empower others to find and grow in the strength and peace of their own inner lights.

In 1996 I found myself on a yoga mat for the very first time. As my life’s journey unfolded over the last twenty years I’ve left my mat quite a few times. Those times off my mat left me restless and unfocused and each time coming back to the mat allowed for balance and inner peace. As a massage therapist and Reiki master my journey has been full. My life’s work incorporates both the physical and spiritual, loving all things that bring us closer to the Divine. I love that yoga allows for both of these at a much deeper, more profound and personal level. I am grateful that my move to South West Florida has brought my yoga practice to my daily life. My intention is to practice yoga with anyone who is willing to join me in this deeply healing path that brings together all the powerful elements of body, mind and spirit both on and off the mat.

Alex Wilson (Crosbie)

Before I ever even knew what yoga was, it called to me. Before I ever even wanted a practice in my life, yoga was there, waiting for me. When I began my slow and inconsistent journey, yoga was patient. When I felt that I was never going to get anything from it, yoga came through for me with exactly what I needed. When I became confident and boastful about my practice, yoga challenged me in new ways and helped me feel humble. Whenever I need something, with faith, practice, and dedication, yoga delivers. As a teacher, my goal is simply to share the gift of yoga with everyone who wants it (and maybe even the people who don’t want it), and my wish is that yoga serves you in whatever way you need it to.

Melody Visingardi

Looking for something to help me relieve/handle stress, I took my first Yoga class in 2011 and received much more than expected - I found myself. Life is not everything outside of us - it's what is inside. When we take time to quiet and still our mind, which yoga helps us do, we find gems. The gems are the tools we need to handle the outside with a sense of peace and calm. My hope is to have you receive the gift that Yoga has been to me. My classes are designed with intention of enabling you to go within and be present to yourself; letting go of everything outside to just be where you are - perfect in the present moment; and hopefully carry that with you out of class.

I am very blessed to have studied with extraordinary teachers and enjoy sharing the dynamic, living tradition of yoga with my students, as I grow into it in my own practice. My approach to yoga is fun, encouraging, and exploratory. I love to combine the spontaneity and intuitive feeling of moving with the breath with the integrity and deep self-knowledge that arises from an alignment-focused practice. Integrating elements of yoga philosophy and practical wisdom, ultimately I hope to guide students in a practice that leads to remembering that we are more than our physical bodies and that we are perfect as we are. If you are present and breathing, I can’t help but think you’re totally amazing, no matter what shape your body is making. I am honored by each student who practices with me and recognize you as my greatest teachers.

I found yoga in 2010 during a difficult time in my life. I was taking one or two classes a week and I remember thinking "Hey, that took my grief away for a second" and I found I could breathe easier. Soon after I retired from the Post Office and moved to SWFL I started my daily practice and realized Yoga has healing and energetic qualities. I began to understand that the ancient philosophies aligned with my beliefs and how I lived my life. I started to see Yoga as a tool for cultivating overall health, wellbeing and self-transformation. I realized this is big stuff and needs to be shared and I completed my 200 hour teacher training at Yoga Bird. My favorite thing about yoga is that it meets you where you are on any given day or moment and carries you to where you need to be. I like to design and teach classes that are accessible, meaningful and sustainable. In class we will consciously connect breath-body-mind while we explore the development of strength, flexibility and balance. I would like to teach you to practice with insight and inner compassion so as leave your mat you do so with an energetic feeling of sense and self.

I have been practicing and teaching yoga for several years, and what I love most is that each time I come to my mat, it offers me an entirely new experience. Yoga has helped me to grow and find stability in life, which is why I find it inspiring to share this growth with others. At Yoga Bird, I am committed to encouraging every individual to find how yoga can ignite their own lives. I will challenge you to find your strengths and explore your weaknesses within the practice, in order to connect with both your mind and body. Each class is its own journey, promising to leave you fulfilled and inspired.

Melinda Krichbaum

In my experience, yoga has always been an extraordinary outlet for healing. As a previous dancer and dance teacher, I have always loved witnessing people's ability to use their bodies to express themselves and find healing. I see the same in yoga. In my classes, I encourage you to use your practice to leave it all on the mat. Take the time to "empty your bucket", and then to refill it with a practice that instills self-love, nourishment, peace, and smiles. Our bodies are intricate tools with a beautiful intuition that can be expressed with alignment-focused yoga. I honor each student that shows up for themselves because I believe that is amazing, in and of itself.

I have been a teacher for 23 years – almost half my life – of everything from driver education to middle school reading to golf to guitar to high school journalism to homeschooling an amazing 12-year-old daughter – and in November 2014 I became a certified yoga instructor.Yoga can be a powerful tool for clearing our path through this world – for being a non-judgmental observer, an active and joyous participant, and a shining light for others. I want to demonstrate that yoga can be practical and accessible, that it can ground you and elevate your senses of wonder and gratitude. My wish is that those who come to my classes feel that they can take their yoga off the mats and into their daily lives. And oh, yeah – let’s have fun in those classes, too! Because yoga has been such an incredible gift for my family, and I am delighted that I get to share that gift.

This well-rounded practice is great for beginners and experienced yogis. Each class will include stretching and essential yoga poses. Classes include clear explanation of the poses and suggestions for how to modify them for your abilities and goals. Yoga 1 allows you to work at an individualized pace to become stronger and more flexible and to improve balance. Beginners will love the pace and explanation, while experienced yogis will have the opportunity to refine and deepen what they have practiced.
